Dick Whittington: Cast and
synopsis
Act1. Scene 1: Felix
the cat calls out to Dick Whittington to hurry, as he can see London Town.
They hide Dick’s lucky silver penny and ask the boys and girls to look
after it. Dick grumbles that Felix is making him study for exams and he
never gets any fun. They hear people laughing and cheering. Scene 2: A
crowd has collected to hear the all girl band, the “Bow Bells” sing
their entry for the Panto Pop Idol TV show. Dick meets the girls when two
highwaymen, Racally Roy and ‘Orrible ‘Olly rush on and cry “stand
and deliver, your money or your life!” Dick and Felix drive them off.
The girls invite Dick to manage them, but Felix won’t let him – he has
to study. The highwaymen reappear in their real identities of Lord Royston
Royston and Sir Oliver Oliphant. Their aim becomes clear: to stop the Bow
Bells winning Panto Pop Idol so that their own band, the Royston Rollers
can win. Felix overhears them, but Olly sees Felix. Scene 4: Alderman
Fitzwarren shows Dick and Felix around his shop. His daughter Alice meets
Dick and they fall in love and sing a duet. Davina Devine, hostess of
Panto Pop Idol enters and gives Dick a bag of jewels to keep in the safe.
They go off to select a new costume for Davina, who leaves her stage
managers, Mick the Brick and Monty Zoomer, to pick up her shopping.
Slapstick routine with the shopping parcels. After they leave, Roy and
Olly meet the Bow Bells and introduce Tabatha Purrfect, a slinky seductive
cat into the group, with the object of luring Felix away. Felix falls head
over heels for Tabatha and they all go off to the Bow Bells club. Scene 5: The Bow Bells and Tabatha give Felix a makeover, and he
transforms into Catter Rapper the funky feline. They all sing a rap song. Scene 6: Rascally
Roy and ‘Orrible ‘Olly enter Fitzwarren’s shop, wearing masks and
carrying a large sack containing dynamite. Slapstick routine of
blowing the safe. They take the bag of jewels. Hearing the noise, Dick,
Alice, Fitzwarren and Davina run in. Roy and Olly take off their
masks and Olly slips the jewel bag in Dick’s coat pocket. Dick is
accused of theft and sent off in disgrace even though Alice swears he is
innocent. Act 2. Scene 7: Felix
finds Dick sitting forlornly by the roadside. Felix blames himself
for not being there. Alice enters and suggests they ask Lord Royston and
Sir Oliver, as they were the ones that noticed the jewels in Dick’s
coat. Felix realises that Dick has been set up because he knows they are
really highwaymen. Tabatha and the Bow Bells enter. Tabatha confesses she
decoyed Felix but now she is sorry. The Bow Bells tell Dick “Turn again
Whittington. Turn again. Return to London Town!” They all sing a “Turn
Again” rap song. Dick collects his lucky penny and hangs it around his
neck and they all head for London. Scene 8:
The TV studio, where there are pots of paint, ladders and flats propped
for assembly. Mick and Monty are on stage. Davina enters and tells them to
get the set built and painted ready for the Panto Pop Idol show. Slapstick
scene of set building chaos. At the end everything is a complete mess.
Davina enters and tells them to get it all cleaned up. “How can we?”
Hopit and Mopit enter. They wear white coats and yellow Marigold gloves
and each carries a brightly coloured feather duster. The cleaning Queens. Scene 9:
Mick
and Monty are sent off to Fitzwarrens for cleaning materials. Hopit and
Mopit daydream about meeting a dream millionaire when Alderman Fitzwarren
enters with the cleaning stuff. Comic rhyme where Hopit and Mopit try to
entice Fitzwarren into marriage. Hopit, Mopit and “Fitzy-Witzy” exit. Scene
10: A
TV studio with a big scoreboard with a clock face marked 0 – 12 and a
single hand. Davina, the Bow Bells, the Royston Rollers and an audience
are on stage. The Royston Rollers give a truly appalling performance of a
pop song, leaving the audience groaning and putting their hands over their
ears. There is complete silence, but the score hand slowly swings up to 9
points. Everyone shouts, “cheat”, but the clock can’t be beaten.
The audience cheer as the Bow Bells give a
great performance of one of the current top hits. Wild cheering and loud
clapping, and the score clock whizzes up to 12. Then the hand slowly
swings back to 0. Davina gets the real audience to join in the clapping to
get the hand to 12, but it continually falls to “null point”. Felix,
Tabatha, Dick and Alice enter, and Tabatha tells Felix that Roy and Olly
are hiding in the clock. Felix goes over and opens the door of the clock,
revealing Roy and Olly holding down the score hand. They run out of the
clock, the hand immediately swings to 12 and the Bow Bells are declared
the winners. Roy tries to shoot Dick, but the shot hits
his lucky penny. Everything ends happily. |
