Sinbad the Sailor: Cast and synopsis

Note: You get two versions of Sinbad when you order. The full 90 minute script and a shorter "Props in the Box" version, designed for minimal staging.

Act 1:
Scene 1: Sailors in Baghdad are singing and dancing. They are interrupted by Marzavan the Merciless who has come looking for Sinbad Hight, to reclaim his stolen magic sword and ring.

Scene 2: Sinbad Hight says he is determined to run away to sea and become a famous sailor. He asks if anyone will join him and Dimdim Zanebi comes up from the audience to volunteer. They hide the ring and ask the audience to call out if they see anyone trying to steal it. They exit and Marzavan enters with his daughter, Sultana, who says he should give up being bad, and settle down to an honest life. Marzavan tells her that she is bewitched, and must follow him.

Scene 3: Sinbad and Dimdim set sail. Sinbad sings of a life at sea, but Dimdim is seasick. Marzavan enters and says he’ll use Firebrand his magic dragon to conjure up a storm. Sinbad and Dimdim are shipwrecked on a desert island.

Scene 4: They find a bottle and Fatima Babubi, a magic Jinn appears in a cloud of smoke. She has three wishes to give Sinbad. Dimdim wishes for food, but Sinbad insists on saving the wishes and they all go in search of food.

Scene 5: Marzavan meets up with Sinbad and his party, but the presence of a Jinn prevents Marzavan’s magic from working. Sinbad and the others exit, and Marzavan tells a reluctant Sultana she must help to trap Sinbad into giving up his magic sword and ring. Dimdim meets the island villagers including the Dervish and his daughter Kisskiss Tangerine. They all join in a song and dance. Sinbad sees Sultana. They fall in love and sing a love song. Falling in love breaks the spell, and they escape on a magic carpet. Fatima finds a ship for the rest to leave the island. Marzavan finds a band of pirates, under their leader Pinkbeard. Black Dog, is also there and they all talk to the audience before going down to their ship.

Scene 6: Long John Pete, the pirate mate meets them, with his parrot Cap’n Splint. They sing how they are too soft hearted to be real pirates. Marzavan pretends to be a sailor and hires the pirates to follow Dimdim’s ship.

Scene 7: On the pirate ship, they try some close order drill, but are not very successful. Dimdim’s ship is sighted and then the magic carpet is seen, silhouetted against the moon. Marzavan sends up Firebrand who tips the carpet over, and Sinbad and Sultana fall into the sea where they are rescued by Dimdim. After a sea battle the pirates capture them. With a song and dance Sinbad persuades the pirates to turn a new leaf and be good, but Marzavan prevents that with a spell. Fatima’s magic doesn’t work because she suffers from seasickness and has gone back to her bottle. There follows a dance number and the interval.

Act 2:
Scene 8: Marzavan lounges on deck, believing he has nearly won. Sinbad, Sultana, Dimdim and Kisskiss are tied to poles. Marzavan exits and snoring is heard. Sinbad gets the audience to shout loudly, and Mustapha Ziz appears from a sea chest where he had been sleeping. He releases them, and they get Fatima out of her bottle. The pirates (except Pinkbeard) appear, but Fatima uses the last of her three wishes to break Marzavan’s spell and they all join forces. Mustapha sails for the island and the rest set sail.

Scene 9: Marzavan appears on the beach with Pinkbeard and Firebrand, and makes Mustapha follow Sinbad in his boat. Marzavan sings a song telling the story of his life.

Scene 10: On Sinbad’s ship Scary Streets, the cook tries to prepare a meal in a slapstick scene. A voice calls “land ho” and they land just ahead of Marzavan. They find the cave, but it is blocked by a rock boulder. Charlie Dimwit and Tommy the Deck (of “Groundfarce”) appear, and Charlie shifts the rock. They all enter the cave.

Scene 11: On the beach Marzavan lands and calls out for the spirits of the cave to help him. He says this is Witch Island because it’s haunted by an evil witch. They sing a song to keep themselves cheerful and ask the audience to call out if they see a witch. Griselda Nightshade appears and chases them all off until only Marzavan is left. Marzavan fails to spell her and she takes a fancy to him. She follows as he runs off..

Scene 12: In the magic cave the spirits try to capture them, but the pirates fight them off. Then Sinbad uses his magic ring and sword to defeat the Hydra monster. Marzavan is then defeated by Sinbad and all his powers fail. Griselda appears and Sinbad insists that Marzavan marry her.

Running time excluding interval, 90 minutes.
